Bone Child of the Blues
Growing up in Minneapolis and St.Paul, Jesse was introduced to the blues, funk and jazz of the Twin Cities even before he was born. ”My dad tells me I was dancing to Prince, Samoa, and Lamont Cranston while I was still in the womb. I was playing the blues on a little 61 key Casio by the time I was 6 when I asked for my first piano lesson. I haven’t stopped playing since.”

Jess has had a series of piano teachers to thank for his interest in all genres of music. Most notably, Tim Almen, the Plymouth Creek Elementary music director, who let Jess hang out in the music room playing blues in the 4th thru 6th grades (while the other kids waited in daycare for their parents to pick them up after school). His eight years of classical training was supplied by Jackie Okoh, who encouraged him to compete at the State level. Later, in his early teens, Jess took lessons from Twin Cities blues/jazz keyboardist, Tom Hunter who brought his playing to a whole new level. After being accepted into the Hopkins High School Jazz Ensemble under the direction of William Bell, Jesse broadened his styles with other Twin Cities educator/jazz performers such as Doug Little, Bobby Peterson, Laura Caviani and Nachito Herrera.

After recording a solo demo at 16, he completed his second professional recording with the PHAT Four, a high school fusion band led by trumpeter John Raymond. The band had great potential gaining some notoriety and air play locally, but after graduation the band members went their separate ways.

After a 2 and half year stint at McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul (which included a 5 week tour of Germany in 2005 with the school’s premiere rock & soul revue M Theory), Jesse was ready to hit the big time. “There isn’t a genre of music I’m not willing to try my skills at, but the blues is my biggest love. Gimme Professor Longhair over Mozart any day.”

“Fortunately I was ‘discovered’ by Dee at a 4th of July party (2006) held by mutual friend. She kinda claimed possession of my talents for her band and I didn’t fight it. Three months later I auditioned and a week after that I was at my first gig with them. Their mature style of blues is perfect to showcase what I do. They all know what their doing so it’s easy to give it my best. And I keep learning with every gig. Playing with Dee and the guys is like jamming on the
back porch at a family
gathering. They are all
family to me.“
